ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - After years behind bars, and a murder conviction overturning, a Dougherty County woman facing life in prison in connection to her husband’s murder has now been released.

In a WALB exclusive video, Susan Embert is seen walking with a family member from the Dougherty County Jail saying, “Thank you, everybody, thank you, Lord, thank you, family, thank you, attorneys. Love y’all.”

Embert was sentenced to life in prison on charges including malice murder in the 2014 death of her husband, Jake Embert. His death was initially ruled a suicide, but his children hired a private investigator to try to find the truth.

Her 2019 malice murder conviction was dropped in Dougherty County after the right to a speedy trial was not upheld, according to a court ruling.

WALB will have more on Embert’s murder case dismissal and her release on WALB News 10 at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
