Lowndes County officials urge pet owners to include animals in fire escape plans
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) — Lowndes County Fire Rescue and Animal Services are using National Pet Fire Safety Day to remind pet owners that emergency plans should include their animals.
The awareness day falls on Wednesday, July 15. Officials are sharing tips from the American Kennel Club to help prevent house fires and protect pets.
Recommendations include extinguishing all open flames before leaving the home, pet-proofing stove knobs and loose wires, and securing young pets when owners are away. Officials also advise keeping pets near entrances so firefighters can locate them more easily.
Homeowners are urged to practice escape routes with their pets and keep leashes near the door.

Lowndes County Fire Rescue Chief Bill Young said pets should be part of every household’s fire safety planning.
“Our pets are part of the family, and they should be included in every home fire escape plan,” Young said. “Taking a few minutes to prepare now can make a lifesaving difference during an emergency and give every member of your household the best chance to escape safely.”
