HAHIRA, Ga. (WALB) - Law enforcement agencies across South Georgia are sharing words of condolences on social media, following the death of an officer on Interstate 75.
Caleb Abney, the Hahira police officer who’s patrol car was struck while he was sitting inside, was a former firefighter for Lowndes County Fire Rescue. They posted these pictures on Facebook as a tribute to him.
According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Abney was conducting a routine traffic stop on a Nissan on I-75 at approximately 12 a.m. when the crash occured.
GSP confirmed that Abney was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver in the Camaro was pronounced dead at SGMC Health.
The Hahira Police Department says that GSP is investigating Officer Abney’s death.

State leaders also echoed these messages of loss. Governor Brian Kemp shared his condolences in a Facebook post.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr shared his condolences in a Facebook post as well.
Georgia Senator Russ Goodman represents District 8, including Hahira. He addressed the Senate today about the dangers that law enforcement officers face while on duty.
