DAWSON, GA (WALB) - A jury returned a guilty verdict for defendant Derrick Smith in the murder of a Terrell County man Thursday.

Smith was found guilty of all eight charges brought against him, including Malice Murder.

Jurors have heard closing arguments early Thursday.

Smith was charged in the shooting death of  Lucious Buchanan, a Terrell County, man five years ago.

The Defense Attorney told the jury Thursday morning the state failed to prove Smith's presence at the scene of Lucious Buchanan's killing.

Identifiable fingerprints were found on submitted physical evidence, but none were traced to Smith. GBI agents say Smith and Buchanan did know one another, but would not go into details about their relationship or a possible motive.

The prosecutor disagreed, stating the guns used in the murder were positively matched to Smith.

Buchanan's daughter, Cynthia Osford was the only witness to testify this morning, describing the tragic day she found her father dead. The prosecutor also had her point out a series of items misplaced inside the home from photographs taken just after his death.

Smith chose not to testify in the trial.
