Enigma voters call for change amid ongoing leadership scandals
ENIGMA, Ga. (WALB) – Enigma voters head to the polls on Tuesday with one clear message: clean house at City Hall. After months of scandal and division, residents say it’s time for change.
“I’m just tired of the lying and all going on around here. These councilmen — I ain’t calling no names — but they done led this town into a mess. We want to get some new people in here and try to get it back like it was before,” resident Emory Guess said.
Criminal charges against city leaders. A tracking device was found on the police chief’s car. The scandals have divided Enigma and shattered trust in local government. Longtime residents describe leaders as operating on favors and backroom deals — and they’re ready for change.

“We want to know. We have the right to know. And now we’re going into an election tomorrow, and we have no answers. No one is taking responsibility. No one is saying anything. We haven’t heard from any of them,” said resident Jackie Laska.
At 83 years old, Laska remembers when Enigma was thriving. She’s watched businesses close and neighbors leave, saying corruption and poor leadership have left the town struggling.
“What you’re looking at is a shadow of what this town used to be. There were grocery stores. There were hardware stores. This whole section was full. This town is not going where it should,” she said.
No council meetings have been held in months, and the most recent one was canceled, leaving residents like Guess hoping for better days in the city.
“I’d like to see the town get back like it was — have some honest people. When they hold a council meeting, they tell you the truth instead of fighting, arguing, and fussing. I’d just like to get it back like it was,” Guess added.
Behind the doors of City Hall, voters will walk in on Tuesday hoping their ballot helps bring new leadership and transparency to Enigma. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
With Election Day approaching, residents in the small town of Enigma say they’re ready for change after a series of leadership scandals that have shaken trust in local government. The controversy stems from recent allegations involving a tracking device found on the police chief’s car, as well as ongoing disputes within city leadership. Many residents say the incidents have left them frustrated and disheartened.
“It’s like shadows of a community that once was good,” one voter told WALB. “We’re just ready for a change — for people who actually care about the community and not just their friends in office.”
Locals describe what they call a long-standing “buddy-buddy system” in city government, and they hope this election will bring transparency, accountability, and a fresh start for Enigma.
WALB has previously reported on the tracking device investigation and the new charges filed against the city clerk, both of which have heightened calls for reform. As the election nears, residents want leaders who will rebuild trust and put the community first.
