COLQUITT, Ga. (WALB) - In the heart of downtown Colquitt, known as the “Mural City,” a new mural is making more than just a visual impact.

It’s the town’s first in over 10 years and carries a powerful message of healing, hope, and togetherness. Funded by a $32,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and the Council of Alcohol and Drugs, the project is part of the State Opioid Response Prevention Initiative. The mural aims to raise awareness for suicide prevention while honoring those in recovery from substance abuse.

The colorful design was inspired by the local Swamp Gravy play A Stone’s Throw, performed at Cotton Hall Theatre. The mural was painted by Trudy Tran who is a former member of Swamp Gravy.

Michelle Cope, one of the project’s consultants, says the goal is to lift spirits and remind viewers that they’re not alone.

“I hope it brings joy and restores that hope that may have been lost,” Cope said, adding that the mural is meant to offer encouragement in moments of struggle.

Will Murdock, who starred in the play that inspired the mural, believes it represents what Colquitt is all about: connection and care.

“We’re better when we’re neighbors helping neighbors,” he said.

The mural’s unveiling will coincide with the final stop of the Georgia Recovery Bus Tour in Miller County, helping provide resources to those in need. As a permanent fixture in the town, the mural stands as a reminder that even in difficult times, the community stands stronger together
