PELHAM, Ga. (WALB) - Ms. Jessica Rauls has been teaching for 16 years, and she said education has always been her passion. She currently teaches special education for Pre-K and first grade.

As a mom herself, Rauls said she strives to treat every child the way she would want her own to be treated.

“I absolutely did not expect [WALB] to come in today. I don’t really do it for the recognition, so it’s very surprising to be nominated, but I am honored. I’m just excited that others see my passion and my drive,” Rauls said.

This year, Ms. Rauls is taking on a double role. In addition to teaching, she was named a part-time behavior support coordinator and now works closely with administration.

Assistant Principal Jamie Davis said it was an easy decision to give her the added responsibility.

“She’s someone who doesn’t need a title, she’ll do whatever is needed for the administration, office staff or custodians,” Davis said. “There have even been days she’s taken out the trash just because it needed to be done. Whatever it takes to keep this school running, she’s willing to do it.”

Ms. Rauls said her goal is to support not just the students, but her fellow teachers as well. She also had a heartfelt message for new educators entering the field.

“Don’t give up,” Rauls said. “I know it will be hard. The role can be rough, and things are changing so much, but stick with it, because our babies need us.”
