Braves acquire RHP Erick Fedde from St. Louis, move Grant Holmes to 60-day IL
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Atlanta Braves on Sunday acquired right-hander Erick Fedde and cash considerations from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later, the team announced.
To make room for Fedde on the 40-man roster, Atlanta moved right-hander Grant Holmes to the 60-day injured list, meaning his season is officially over.
Holmes was removed from Saturday’s game against Texas with elbow tightness and was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday morning with right elbow inflammation. The acquisition of Fedde, combined with Holmes’ swift move to the 60-day IL, suggests the team received discouraging news about his condition. He finishes the season with a 3.99 ERA and 123 strikeouts over 115 innings.
Erick Fedde, 32, is 3-10 with a 5.22 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 20 starts, with just 63 strikeouts and 47 walks in 101.2 innings with St. Louis this season. He was designated for assignment on Wednesday. The Cardinals will reportedly cover the majority of Fedde’s $7.5 million salary in 2025.
Fedde enters Atlanta’s rotation that consists of Spencer Strider, Bryce Elder and Joey Wentz. Holmes joins Chris Sale (rib), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) and AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) on the 60-day injured list.
The Braves - expected to be sellers at the July 31 trade deadline - sit at 44-60 with two months left to go in the season.
