City of Colquitt reports a major wastewater spill

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been notified of the spill, the city said.

COLQUITT, Ga. (WALB) - On Monday, July 21, the city of Colquitt announced a major wastewater spill that happened in or around May 2025.

According to the city, the spill happened near the intersection of Grow Street and First Street. It is estimated that about 500,000 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged into the open ditch that runs into Spring Creek.

The city said that upon discovery of the spill, a contractor crew was immediately dispatched to repair all problems and begin the initial clean-up and disinfection of the spill.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been notified of the spill, the city said. Water quality monitoring is ongoing to ensure that proper procedures to remedy have been followed.
