ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A staple side dish in southern cuisine could soon be kneaded into the Georgia law books.

A newly proposed bill, HB 1048, would designate cornbread as the official state bread.

“The colorful history and traditions of the State of Georgia are inextricably associated with the food traditions of corn,” the bill reads. “Cornbread enjoys a singular stature in Georgia history and culture that is rivaled only by its undeniable appeal as a versatile and satisfying food. Establishing cornbread as the official Georgia state bread is necessary to fully recognize the importance of this product to this state.”

If approved by lawmakers and signed into law, cornbread will join the peach, Vidalia onion and grits in the ranks of state-designated foods.

Currently, the bill has only been introduced in the Georgia House.
