Woman arrested for stealing mail from boxes

Tracey Mobley was arrested Monday for tampering with mailboxes and taking mail from numerous mailboxes in Lowndes County.

Sheriff Chris Prine says that Mobley had five dozen letters and other pieces of mail taken from area residents, and none were addressed to her.

She told a deputy that she was lost, and was trying to find her location by looking at the addresses on the mail.

Now Lowndes County authorities are working with the U. S. Postal Service to determine if any other mail was taken. Tampering with mail is a federal offense

Here is a release sent by the Lowndes County sheriff-

On Sunday, January 12, around 11:30 p.m., a resident on Pine Needle Drive noticed a person looking through their mailbox and quickly contacted 911 and provided a vehicle description. The responding deputies located and stopped the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, Tracey Mobley was interviewed by deputies and stated that she was lost and was checking the mail boxes to determine where she was at. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of approximately 60 pieces of mail intended for various recipients none of which were Tracey Mobley.

Tracey Mobley was arrested and taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

According to Sheriff Prine, this investigation is continuing as investigators work to contact the additional victims who are missing mail and determine what Mobley intended to do with the information gained from the mail. Investigators from the Sheriff's Office have also contacted the Postal Inspectors and are working closely together.

Sheriff Prine is asking that anyone with information on this case, or any other case to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office at {229} 671-2950 or anonymous tips can be provided at {229} 671-2985 or on line at www.lowndessheriff.com.
