Phoebe/FTC deadline extended again

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As the Federal Trade Commission and Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital continue to try to find common ground for the absorption of the former Palmyra Hospital into the Phoebe fold, they've been given more time to make the deal.

A federal judge granted a 30-day extension to the negotiation period for the two parties in June, and there was another extension granted until August . Now another extension has been grated until August 22, 2013.

The FTC filed suit in April of 2011 challenging Phoebe Putney's purchase of the former HCA Palmyra Medical Center on the grounds the sale would create a virtual monopoly in the area.

Phoebe purchased the hospital and called it Phoebe North after the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a federal judge's ruling the hospital authority was exempt from antitrust laws under Georgia law.

The United States Supreme Court in an unanimous ruling reversed that decision in February of this year ruling Georgia's shield laws does not cover hospital authorities.
