BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WCTV) - A special giveaway event sparked lots of smiles in Bainbridge Thursday evening as kids received new helmets to boost safety in the city.

Several organizations teamed up to give away the gear as part of the Brain Safety Initiative with Bainbridge High School’s Anchor Club.

The goal of the initiative is to help people who ride bicycles, scooters or skateboards.

More news out of South Georgia:

Anchor Club co-sponsor Heidi Chambers said plenty of kids came out to get their new equipment on Thursday.

“We are trying to get helmets in the hands of kids in our community that ride bikes, ride skateboards, even four-wheels, four-wheelers, things like that. Just trying to keep them safer, trying to teach them about brain safety and the importance of these things because a lot of times kids don’t understand the importance,” Chambers said.

Altogether, the organization says it received a total of 110 helmet donations.
