2 dead, 8 hurt in fiery crash; 3 officers among the injured
MESA, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) — Two people were killed and eight others, including three police officers, were injured in a fiery crash early Saturday in Arizona.
Authorities said the collision took place near the intersection of Southern Avenue and Dobson Road in Mesa just before 12:30 a.m.
Investigators said a westbound vehicle was speeding when it rear-ended a second vehicle that was coming out of a private drive. The rear-end impact caused the second vehicle to go up in flames.
Officials said the driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead. A 17-year-old who was a passenger in the second vehicle also died. Five passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries before later being released.
Officers raced to rescue people who were inside the burning vehicle, and three officers suffered minor injuries. All three officers have been released from the hospital and are recovering.
KPHO crews witnessed one vehicle burnt from the crash, and pieces of the rear bumper had been ripped off. The second vehicle was overturned on its side.
The intersection was closed for a majority of the morning but reopened shortly before 8 a.m.
Police said no charges will be filed from the fiery wreck.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no victims have yet been identified.
