UGA punter Brett Thorson wins 2025 Ray Guy Award
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - University of Georgia punter Brett Thorson won the Ray Guy Award Friday evening.
The Ray Guy Award, named for college football’s best punter, honors the nation’s best collegiate punter in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
The two other finalists were Evan Crenshaw from Troy and Palmer Williams from Baylor.
Thorson was announced as the winner during The Home Depot College Football Awards show broadcast live on ESPN Friday evening.
Augusta University holds undergraduate commencement ceremony
Augusta University students walked the stage Thursday for their undergraduate commencement ceremony.
The Ray Guy Award committee evaluated the candidates based on their overall statistics and contributions to their teams. Particular emphasis was placed on net punting average, percentage of punts inside the 20-yard line, and percentage of punts not returned.
This is the third time Thorson has been nominated as a finalist for the award.
The senior from Melbourne, Australia, currently holds a net average of 42.9 yards per punt. Of his 42 punts this season, just four were returned for a combined total of 15 yards.
Thorson placed half of his punts inside the 20, forced 22 fair catches and had four touchbacks.
His biggest punt of the season went for 66 yards, and 13 of his punts went for 50 yards or more.
Thorson becomes the second Bulldog punter to win the award, joining Drew Butler (2009).
