BERRIEN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - This week’s VSU Scholar Athlete comes out of Berrien High School.

Chason Warren is a freshman pitcher on the Berrien Rebels softball team. Starting ninth grade and starting on varsity can be a lot to manage, but Warren is adjusting just fine.

“For me, my schoolwork comes first. Sports comes second. I think that it’s very important that your education comes before anything. To be able to balance that, like after practice — before you do anything — think your homework needs to be done, even if that means staying up late at night. You just have to make sure everything is complete," said Warren.

Warren is already off to a hot start on the softball field. In the Rebels’ first game of the year, she had her first career homerun, and the team’s first of the season. While that’s already a big accomplishment, Warren said being a freshman and having her teammates see her as a leader is even bigger.

“I know what it’s like to be down and not have anyone to help pick you up. So, for me, I want to be that person for others to encourage them and push them to be better,” said Warren.

Warren said she is encouraged by her relationship with her parents and with the Lord, adding that they always have her back.

“My walk with Jesus is a very important thing in my life. I think that being obedient to the Lord and His plan for me has really just pushed me to be the person I am today because I wouldn’t be here without Him,” continued Warren.
