Man accused of intentionally ramming truck into police officer, bragging about it on social media
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) - A man is accused of intentionally ramming a vehicle into a Louisiana police officer and then bragging about it on social media.
According to police, Sgt. Caleb Eisworth was on his way home from work on Monday when 41-year-old Gad Black was driving a Ford F-150 when he intentionally knocked Eisworth off of his marked police motorcycle and dragged him more than 500 feet.
Eisworth, a 23-year veteran of the force, was left with two broken legs and a broken arm, among other injuries.
He was listed as in “extremely critical condition” at a hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“A great officer, a family man, a father, a husband, and a friend of mine. We need prayers,” said Brandon O’Neal, the president of the Baton Rouge Union of Police. “We got kids getting murdered in the streets, now a good friend of mine is fighting for his life in the hospital right now. It doesn’t make sense.”
Black has been charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, hate crimes and resisting an officer.
According to an arrest report, Black allegedly left the scene after ramming into the officer. He was later arrested after he was tased during a struggle.
During an interview with authorities, Black alluded to a deep-rooted hatred for law enforcement, according to the arrest report. Black also admitted to following Eisworth just before the crash.
Deputies said that Black’s girlfriend, Asia Raby, 40, has also been arrested and is charged with obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.
As part of the investigation into the crash, law enforcement reviewed a 911 call that involved Raby.
The arrest report states that Raby provided a description of Black’s vehicle and later told authorities that she had located Black. Raby said she had taken possession of Black’s vehicle and did not need any further assistance, according to authorities.
Raby was told she would need to provide her and Black’s location. Raby then disconnected from a call with dispatchers, according to the arrest report. Raby was arrested at her home, which is also where the Ford F-150 was found, authorities said.
Black was previously arrested in 2014 on two counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle on a police officer and put on probation after a plea deal.
