Quiet Sunday Evening, Storms Return Overnight and Monday
SUMMERLIKE PATTERN RETURNS FOR LATE WEEK
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - After a decaying line of showers and storms moved into South Georgia this morning, there wasn’t really much in the way of redevelopment during the day Sunday. Cloud cover, cooler temperatures, and spotty rainfall helped to zap the atmosphere of any energy to create storms.
However, the atmosphere has been rebuilding that energy slowly but surely this afternoon and evening. With temperatures still in the 80s to near 90 today despite the widespread clouds, there is still an abundance of energy for storms to tap into. And with disturbances riding along strong west winds aloft, storms could fire day or night with the current pattern.
Some of our high-resolution forecast models show storms redeveloping overnight tonight into early Monday morning and “training” like train cars on a track over the same areas. If this solution holds true, not only will the strongest storms carry some gusty winds and possibly a few large hailstones, but minor flooding may come into play as a threat as well.
Waves of storms will continue to move through South Georgia during the day Monday into early on Tuesday. Any one of those waves could bring storms that produce strong gusty winds. The tornado threat, like this weekend, remains pretty much zero.
By Wednesday, winds aloft decrease, and we’ll set into a pattern more like June in the area. Scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms will build randomly throughout the area, dying off as the sun sets. Outside the storms, highs will increase back into the lower 90s by the end of the week, with lows staying in the low to mid 70s due to the abundance of moisture sticking around.
