Southeastern Conference upping ‘rushing the field, court’ fines
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The SEC is cracking down on schools whos fans rush the field or storm the court after a game, it was announced Thursday.
The conference will now penalize schools $500,000 per incident of fans storming the field or rushing the court.
“The motivation was ‘field rushing is field rushing, the first time or the 18th time’,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday. “The random nature of, if you’re the one getting rushed, it doesn’t feel good. It might be the first time (it happened) there, but it might be your sixth time in a row, literally.”
The SEC also has the ability to wave the fine if the visiting team and officials are allowed to get to the locker room before the fans descend.
Previously, the conference had an ‘escalating fine system’ where schools would be fined $100,000 for the first offense, $250,000 for the second offense, and $500,000 for the third offense.
Now, the conference is going totally away from the fine system and will fine each school the $500,000 per incident.
