New details in Colquitt Co. crash that left mother, daughter dead
COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - WALB has learned new information regarding the other driver involved in the crash, that left a mother and her 3-year-old daughter dead.
According to Georgia State Patrol (GSP), the driver of the Ford-F150 has been identified as George Montgomery, 48, from Union City, Ga.
Montgomery was also injured during the crash and had to be taken to the hospital where he was later transferred to another.
He has not been booked into the Colquitt County jail. GSP tells WALB that charges in reference to this crash are still being actively investigated by the SCRT unit.
On Sunday, October 13, Montgomery failed to yield at the intersection of GA-111 and Bob Taylor Road. He crashed into a vehicle filled with members of a family.
Jessica and Ellie Phillips died in the crash. Eric Phillips suffered broken ribs and third-degree burns. He is currently recovering at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
Those closest to the family have spoken about how supportive and loving the community has been.
“The love and support that this community has shown, it‘s been indescribable. Strangers coming to me at Walmart, recognizing me. It’s just been amazing. The hugs, the love, the support, the prayers, and the money, it’s so hard to ask for,” said Diana Fletcher, best friend of Jessica Phillips.
The family’s GoFundMe has raised nearly $50,000. The money raised will help cover the cost of two funerals as well as any medical bills.
Close friends of Jessica Phillips have created t-shirts available for purchase. All the proceeds will go directly to the Phillips family.
“We were in a band together. The band was called 4:13 and Jessica was one of our lead singers. One of the first songs she ever sang was “It is well with my soul. So, I created a shirt with that on it. I’m selling those to raise money to give to her sons and to Eric to support them through this time,” said Ashley Adams, close friend and bandmate of Jessica.
The band will be getting back together to hold a benefit concert to help raise money for the family.
The family is hoping that Eric Phillips will be released from the hospital this week.
