THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WALB) - A man is now facing several charges in connection to a deadly hit-and-run incident in Thomasville.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, a state trooper was called to the scene of a fatal hit-and-run at Old Albany Road at Cannon Road.

After an initial investigation, a vehicle was found to have struck Ashvimkumar Patel from behind as he was walking on the west shoulder of Old Albany Road, a GSP report said. The driver reportedly left the scene after striking Patel.

GSP says they used surveillance cameras to identify the driver as Luis Lozano.

While being questioned, Lozano claimed he thought he, “either hit a dog or mailbox,” per a report. GSP says they found that Lozano was not driving under the influence (DUI) during questioning.

Lozano was charged on Oct. 7 with:

  • First-degree vehicular homicide
  • Failure to stop for an accident with injury/fatality
  • Failure to maintain lane
  • Driving without a license
