2 dogs at Albany Humane Society test positive for Parvovirus
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On Monday, June 3, two dogs tested positive for the Canine Parvovirus at the Albany Humane Society, according to the Albany Police Department (APD).
The disease, commonly known as Parvo, attacks the gastrointestinal tract and white blood cells of dogs and other animals, according to the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA).
The shelter is now under a two-week-long quarantine, where workers are disinfecting the facility.
If no other animals show signs of the virus, the shelter will reopen to take new animals on Monday, June 17.
The AVMA says the following breeds are especially susceptible to the disease:
- Rottweilers
- Doberman pinschers
- Bull terrier breeds
- German shepherds
- English springer spaniels
It is currently unknown what breed of dogs contracted Parvo.
