MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

An inmate of the Colquitt County jail managed to escape custody this morning, but he didn't get far, and didn't stay free long.

About 10:20 Friday morning, Xavier Sims got out of a day room, where mechanical workers were working.

He escaped, and managed to get about 300 yards away from the jail. Lieutenant Rod Howell and a deputy captured him across the street from the jail.

Investigators said Sims stole a Colquitt County technical maintenance van and drove off.

He ran into a patrol car and almost hit a deputy with the van.

The incident lasted about 15 minutes, and ended with Sims returned to custody.

Sims is now facing charges of escape, aggravated assault on an officer, two counts of interference with government property, possession of tools in the commission of a crime, theft by taking motor vehicle and numerous misdemeanor traffic charges.
