BEN HILL CO., GA (WALB) - Traffic is scheduled to shift Wednesday onto the new alignment of US 129/SR 11 and the new House Creek Bridge in Ben Hill County.
The shift is contingent upon weather conditions and the schedules of subcontractors.
The bridge is 9.5 miles north of Fitzgerald at the Wilcox County line. The replacement is west of the old bridge, which was built in 1954 and is structurally deficient.
The new bridge is built at a higher elevation with a longer length and wider shoulders. The old bridge and the roadway approaches leading to it will be removed, a process that will start after traffic shifts.
The final layer of asphalt will not be laid on the new roadway until a later date due to the way construction is staged. The final surfacing will require some traffic interruptions.
The entire project is about 83% complete and is due to be finished November 30. The construction cost is $4.4 million and the prime contractor is Doyle Hancock & Sons Construction Inc.
