COFFEE CO., GA (WALB) - Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Douglas office confirmed Monday a man died after an altercation with Coffee County law enforcement.

William Franklin Goodwin died as a result of a shooting that happened Saturday. The shooting occurred at a residence in the 500 block of 1st Avenue.

Coffee County Sheriff's Office deputies were serving an arrest warrant on Goodwin when he was shot.

In June, law enforcement issued a warrant on Goodwin for failing to maintain requirements of his sex offender status, but the GBI could not confirm the Saturday incident was related to that case.

The Coffee County Sheriff's Office requested the GBI launch an investigation.

Goodwin's body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Macon for an autopsy.

GBI officials said the autopsy should be conducted this week.
