DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) - Captain Jason Hagger with Dougherty County Police Department warns residents that if they are going to walk on roadways there could be dangers.

"In a lot of rural country roads, where motorists are not expecting to have pedestrians, they're going to be going down the road and may or may not see that person," explained Hagger.

On Tuesday morning, a man was hit while helping change a tire.  Then later in the evening, a woman walking on Holly Drive started to cross the street and was hit by a car.

But DCP said that if you decide to walk on roadways, there are some things you can do to decrease your chances of being hit.

"Wear light-colored clothing, be visible and be aware of your surroundings," said Hagger.

He said pedestrians should also walk against the flow of traffic, so you can see what is coming and choose an area that is well lit.

Hagger also has advice for drivers.

"Keep an eye out for potential hazards like people walking," said Hagger.

Hagger added to watch your speed.

"In instances where you have limited lighting, limited visibility, slow down so you can react to any dangers that may appear," said Hagger.

Investigators said they don't know where the woman on Holly Drive was walking to, or why she walked out into the road.

Dougherty County police cited the pedestrian with being in the road for failure to yield to a vehicle.
