SUMTER CO., GA (WALB) - Sumter County rolled out a new emergency alert system called CodeRED.
Now, the county needs you to sign up for it.
The program uses your location to alert you to severe weather or local emergencies like a prisoner escape or a water line break.
It costs the county about $10,000 a year but it's free for residents.
All you have to do is fill out a short form.
It's an opt-in system, not an opt-out and it uses the address you put on file to send out notifications.
County leaders have been working on the partnership with CodeRED for over three years.
To opt-in for alerts, you can sign up on the CodeRED website.
