AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - More than $3 million in state funding is on its way to Georgia Southwestern State University.
The school will receive $3.4 million to fund the renovation of the Academic Center for Excellence, the building GSW uses to advise students.
The funding is included in House Bill 684 for Georgia's 2019 Fiscal Year budget.
Stephen Snyder with Georgia Southwestern State University said this renovation will especially benefit the first generation college students.
"We have over 50 percent of our students are first-generation college students and this building in particular goes a long way into contributing to their success because historically and statistically, those students, they don't graduate as quickly as the rest of the general population of our student population," said Snyder.
The university still has to draw up the plans for the renovation. Officials hope to start in early 2019.
