THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) - Officials are still working to determine who and what spilled approximately 2,000 gallons of diesel off Hall Road and Highway 319 last week.
According to EMA Director Chris Jones, the first point of impact was the retention pond behind Murphy USA gas station off Highway 319.
The diesel then drained into a creek nearby, that runs near Garrison Pilcher Elementary.
The diesel that was spilled was off-road diesel, which is not sold by Murphy USA.
The initial response of trying to contain the spill was incurred by the county, a dollar figure they estimate less than $20,000.
"The initial efforts of trying to stop the flow of the stream so that it doesn't impact a greater area, and the fuel doesn't get further down the stream. and also to get the school back so they could open up for normal business" said Jones.
Murphy USA will be reimbursing the county for that expense since it occurred on their property but starting their own investigation into how the diesel was spilled and who did it.
