ALBANY, GA (WALB) - We have fewer than three days left of 2017, and if you're still looking for a way to ring in 2018, then you may want to head to downtown Albany.
The City of Albany is hosting its first ever New Year's Eve Downtown Fireworks Celebration on Sunday, December 31, at Riverfront Park.
Organizers said this was a way to keep people in Albany, and attract other South Georgians to downtown.
"We lose a lot of people around this time of the year, because they want to go to Atlanta and see the peach drop. Or, they want to go somewhere else and spend the New Year, so with this we are trying to keep people here," said Downtown Albany Business Development Manager Jacquelyn Teemer.
Entertainment will begin at 11:00 p.m. with a special countdown display.
"We will have a big countdown on display, so that everyone can join in and see when the fireworks will sound off," she said.
Dale Henry, who is in charge of Albany's 4th of July Celebration, will be in charge of creating the New Year's Eve fireworks display.
As for safety, Albany Police will have extra patrols out during the event.
Police want to remind parents that the 11:00 p.m. curfew is still in effect. Those under the age of 18 must be with an adult after that time.
