ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Construction will be starting on Lake Blackshear's second bridge.
The new U.S. 280 bridge will be built across the popular lake, and south of the existing bridge.
It will create a four lane bridge to reduce congestion, help the flow of freight traffic and connect the Cordele Intermodal Center to cities to the west --- which could spur economic development.
The $30 million-dollar bridge is being funded by the Transportation Investment Act, a program that relies on a one percent regional sales tax to fund transportation improvements.
TIA reps said the project was approved back in 2012.
"We've know about for awhile so after it got approved, it kind of works like anything you can imagine of a project of this scale. We kind of went through a design period, we have to make sure that the area is environmentally and ecologically safe before we start building so right now we're at the phase where you'll actually see your money put to work," said TIA Public Relations Specialist Karen Hudd.
Transportation Investment act reps said the bridge is expected to be completed by May 2019.
