Second officer dies in Americus shooting

(WALB) - According Georgia Southwester State University, Officer Jody Smith, a GSW safety officer, died on Thursday after he was shot Wednesday in Americus.

Smith and Officer Nicholas Smarr were both shot Wednesday after they responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex.

GSW released the following statement after the school was notified that Smith had passed:

We have just received word that GSW Public Safety Officer Jody Smith has succumbed to his injuries and has passed away. We offer our deepest condolences to his family during this very difficult time. Officer Smith was a bright, young and energetic officer, and he will be sorely missed.

Law enforcement went on a manhunt for the suspect Minquell Lembrick, 32. On Thursday, after a standoff, Lembrick was later pronounced dead due to an apparent self inflicted wound.
