ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An Albany developer has submitted a proposal that could help bring new life into a vacant building, known as Albany Heights.
City commissioners said developer Pace Burt, a native of Albany, could take the next step in transforming downtown Albany.
BJ Fletcher, the City Commissioner for Ward 3, said it's been a long time coming to have someone like Burt come in and help get the downtown area up and moving.
"Just picture coming down here and being able to eat a nice lunch," Fletcher said, while standing on the front porch of the building.
"In order for us to have jobs come here and businesses to thrive here, we believe that a thriving downtown is essential," said Sharon Subadan, Albany's City Manager.
At the corner of Pine Avenue and North Jackson, the building, which was last used in November of 2014, could soon have new tenants.
"We have been trying to attract a private investor to redevelop it into housing, housing that's suitable for individuals who are interested in living near to the urban core," said Subadan.
Burt, who has worked all across the southeast, proposed a plan to put apartments in the building, along with some shops.
"He's going to take some of the bottom space and he's going to do some retail," said Fletcher. "We're going to take advantage of the schools here and the visitors and that's the route he's going."
Commissioners said entertainment is what will bring in more people to the area. They said they are hopeful Burt will inspire others in the private sector to commit to improving the area as well.
"We've got probably more than what a lot of people have. People's just have to help us put the package together," said Fletcher.
Next, Burt's proposal will go before the city commission for them to discuss. Fletcher said that will most likely be in the next few months.
