ALBANY, GA (WALB) - People gathered at Lake Loretta on Tuesday night to celebrate survivors and remember victims of domestic violence.
Albany's Liberty House shelter hosted the 5th annual butterfly release to promote domestic violence awareness and prevention and support for victims.
60 people in Georgia died in the last year because of domestic violence, ranking the state 8th in the country.
Organizers said it's important to hear the stories of survivors.
"They tell us about how they got out, they tell us that they're survivors, they tell us stories about their sisters, about their mothers, about other family members that have experienced domestic violence," said Liberty House Executive Director Silke Deeley.
Liberty House is sponsoring events throughout October which is domestic violence awareness month.
