VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - An inmate has died while he was in custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections at Valdosta State Prison.

The inmate's name was Dominique Bohannon Hurt, who was 33. A cause of death has not been released.

He began serving time in 2003 for a statutory rape conviction in Baldwin County in 2002. He also had charges of failure to register as a sex offender.

This incident is currently under investigation, according to Gwendolyn Hogan of the Office of Public Affairs.

Hurt's death is the third death at the prison this year.

Two Valdosta State Prison inmates died in February after a mattress in their cell caught fire.

Investigators say cellmates Richard Strickland and Cody Vestal passed away following the fire Tuesday.  Officials are still investigating to determine how the fire started.

Officials say both prisoners were rushed to South Georgia Medical Center.

The men were identified as 36-year-old Cody Vestal and 31-year-old Richard Strickland.

"We get one or two deaths at the prison whether they're natural or accidental or even homicide but this is the first time since I've been deputy since 2012 that we've had a fire incident," said Lowndes County Deputy Coroner, Brad Carter.
