Inmate from drug bust dies in custody

CORDELE, GA (WALB) - Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock says that Sunday morning about 7:00, officers from the Crisp County Detention Center received a call from an inmate in one of the cells saying that an inmate had fallen.

Officers found 43 year old Eric Bernard Newsome lying on the floor, complaining of dizziness. EMS examined Newsome, and said that he should be taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Newsome died about 9:00AM at Crisp Regional Hospital. The exact cause has not yet been determined

Sheriff Hancock followed standard protocol involving the death of any inmate in custody, and notified the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to lead the investigation and determine a cause of death.

Hancock sent his condolences to the family and friends of Eric Newsome.
