ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Police were searching for the man responsible for assaulting an officer during a burglary early Monday morning, and just after midnight, they got him.
John Sanders, 45, was picked up in the 700 block of West Oglethorpe Boulevard, Monday night. He had a first appearance in the jail courtroom this morning, and was denied bond, on charges of burglary and obstruction of a law officer. More charges could be brought against Sanders.
It all started at the Dollar General on South Slappey Boulevard just before 3:00AM.
Patrolman Nicholas Parker responded to the store's burglary alarm when he saw a suspect crawling out of a broken glass door.
Parker yelled for him to stop, and a struggle broke out. Parker used his taser to try to disable the burglar, but the crook ripped off the wires and hit Parker in the head with an unknown object. The crook ran off empty handed.
Chief Michael Persley said that Officer Parker stayed home Monday to recover from his injury.
