AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - If you're looking for a quick getaway, you might find it right here in South Georgia. Trip Advisor says one of the top bed and breakfast spots in the world is in Americus.
The Americus Garden Inn is said to be oldest home in Americus still standing at its original site at almost 270 years old.
You could never tell though when you walk inside.
From the old, original floors, to the dining room where breakfast is served, the home is in amazing shape.
This couple made the switch from corporate America to inn keeping 14 years ago.
"It's a slower pace of life. It's a different quality of life. And certainly one that we find very enjoyable," said owner Kim Egelseer.
This place is more of an experience than just a place to sleep.
"The first they can expect is to be treated like friends and family," said Susan Egelseer.
And the second thing you can expect?
"We will know your name. We will greet you by name," said Susan.
The home is totally open to its guests. There's a sprawling garden in the back of the acre and a half sized lot.
You won't find any signage out front though; they want to keep away walk-in guests.
"We prepare rooms by advance reservation only so that we can be totally prepared to offer you the experience you want when you come and stay with us," said Susan.
But tucked away on the renovated back porch are these prestigious awards.
The first came in 2007.
"We received this box and there was an award from Trip Advisor. We had never even heard of Trip Advisor," said Susan.
The award is a top spot in the 20 best bed and breakfast spots in the US.
To date, they've won 7 more including this year.
"It's never been about awards. It's always been about treating our guests like friends and family," said Susan.
"It's a little bit of that kind of [closeness] and camaraderie that you get in a small setting at a bed and breakfast versus a public lobby at a hotel," said Kim.
Their goal of being welcoming place seems accomplished when you look at the worldwide recognition they now have.
The couple tells me it's truly a life of service they've chosen; they are the only ones who work there.
They say they do still take time off every once in a while to enjoy each other's company alone.
