AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The Americus Police Department is warning citizens about a telephone scam targeting city businesses, using utility bills as a guise.

The caller claims to be an employee with the City of Americus, and tells potential victims that their services will be disconnected immediately if they don't give a credit card number for payment.

But the truth is that the City's Customer Service Center will never call citizens and ask them to provide card numbers over the phone, and they never threaten to turn off services.

If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the City of Americus, contact the police department Criminal Investigation Division at 229-924-4550.
