VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta State University President Dr. William McKinney announced he will step down as president effective July 1, 2015.
According to a release, information regarding the search for the next president of Valdosta State University will be announced in the coming months.
There was no immediate official word on why McKinney was stepping down.
McKinney's move to step down comes on the heels of administrative internal controversy at the university. In February, members of VSU's faculty senate held a meeting to discuss some concerns regarding President McKinney and the university.
In a letter to students and staff, McKinney talked about his time as the university's leader, but did not speak to the reason for his departure.
McKinney was named president of Valdosta State University in 2012.
University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby thanked Dr. McKinney for his contributions and his "commitment to higher education."
