ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Dougherty County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested one of their own officers after they said the official was bringing contraband into the facility.

Detention officer Felicia Ruiz has been charged with conspiracy to bring contraband into the jail and violation of oath of office.

Sheriff Kevin Sproul immediately fired Ruiz when she was arrested. The Sheriff says the arrest came as part of an internal affairs investigation into the smuggling of drugs into the jail.

"This is still an ongoing investigation, with citizens in our community and some other individuals that I can't mention right now. But it did have to do with illegal narcotics," said Sproul.

Ruiz was released on $7,500 bond Friday morning. Sheriff Sproul said his investigators moved ahead to arrest Ruiz because of the need to protect his employees and inmates in the jail.

Ruiz had worked for the jail for less than one year.
