ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Jacob Joiner has already signed to play his college golf at Georgia Tech.
Before he heads off with the Jackets, he has one more thing to do.
The Albany teen will play in August's U.S. Amateur Championship in Atlanta, after qualifying last month in Orlando.
"This has been pretty much what I've worked for since I've started golfing really," he says. "This is the peak for the amateurs."
Past U.S. Amateur champs include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Matt Kuchar. Joiner would love to add his name to that list, but says just making the field is a huge accomplishment.
He's spending the next month getting ready.
"I'm just going to keep putting in the same amount of work, keep tweaking the parts that need work," he says.
As special as playing in the tournament will be, Joiner hopes it can be even better.
His younger brother, Tyler, qualified as the field's first alternate. He says each of them playing in the tournament would make it even more memorable.
"It'd mean a lot, especially for my whole family to go and watch," he says.
The U.S. Amateur Championship begins August 11 in Atlanta.
