CRISP CO., GA (WALB) - One lane is back open on Highway 300 after a semi-truck hauling about 25 rolls of hay caught fire.

The northbound lanes near Old Hatley Road were closed for several hours Tuesday afternoon as crews battled the intense blaze.

The owner of Shingler Farms Inc. in Blakely says the driver noticed the hay was on fire, pulled over and got out before the rest of the truck burned up.

"The hay itself is very flammable. But as far as danger goes, we have blocked off 300 and were able to get the traffic diverted so we're working fine with the area that we're in with no danger," said Chief Ray Lunsford, with the Crisp County Fire Department.

City fire officials initially responded and called Crisp County for help.  Firefighters used more than 8,000 gallons of water to put out the blaze. Fire officials aren't sure what caused the hay to catch fire.
