Fighting Hunger in South Georgia

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - A south Georgia food bank has made a major step towards ending hunger in our area.

The Second Harvest of South Georgia officially opened its new regional distribution facility in Thomasville on Wednesday.

Georgia congressmen Sanford Bishop and Austin Scott were able to get a first hand look at the new kitchen that will be able to produce ten-thousand meals per day.

The new facility was built with help from the United States Department of Agriculture.

"We have made a $5.2 million direct loan, for this facility and we think that it will have a very positive impact on the local area,"  said USDA Rep. Rich Davis.

"I'm just excited as are all the people that are here gathered from all across southwest Georgia and we're just thankful and grateful for the cooperation amongst all of the sectors," said Congressman Bishop.

Second Harvest of South Georgia also wants to use the facility to improve nutrition in kids by creating more kids cafe` programs.
