OCILLA, GA (WALB) - Parents of students lined up outside to pick their kids up after word spread about a gun on campus.
It happened at Irwin County High School Tuesday morning when a former student entered the school without permission and was confronted by a teacher.
"[She] asked the student what they were doing on campus and the student basically said he was here to see about whatever may be happening on campus," said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Thad Clayton
School officials say Monday night they received a tip about a possible altercation planned at the school.
School leaders called law enforcement and had them present Tuesday morning in a show of force.
The former male student, who has not been named, did not take a gun inside the school, but later confessed that he did have one on the campus.
"There was not a weapon on him," said Clayton. "When his vehicle was searched, there were loaded weapons in his vehicle. We had a tip there may be more violence of some sort."
School officials say the problem may have started on social media.
"We do have some indication that there was some Facebook communication yesterday evening off campus," said Clayton." So for us we were trying our best to make sure there were not any threats of any kind."
Students said teaches told them a somewhat similar version of the situation.
"They told us that it had something to do with Facebook and it was racially motivated. I don't know. That's all I know," said student Casey Shuman.
Law enforcement locked down the school after more threats of violence and searched lockers to make sure no other weapons were on school grounds.
No other weapons were found.
Charges against the former student have not been named. He is still being held by Police.
The arrest comes after Irwin County Sheriff's officials addressed rumors surrounding the incident. In a Facebook post Irwin County 911 said:
