Pedestrian hit by train in Tifton

TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Update:

Here are new details on a man hit by train this afternoon in Tifton.

His name hasn't been released, but we know the 25 year-old man was seriously injured and was being transferred to a hospital in Macon Tuesday night.

He was walking right next to the tracks near Martin Luther King Drive about 4:45 p.m. The Norfolk Southern train was going about 40 miles per hour.

The engineer blew the whistle, but the man did not get out of the way and was struck.

A pedestrian is recovering after being hit by a train in Tifton Tuesday afternoon.

The Tift County Sheriff's Office tells WALB a pedestrian was hit by a train near a crossing and survived. Crews at the scene say the person who has not been named sustained injuries and was talking to EMS at the scene.

We are told it happened near MLK Drive in Tifton.

Officials say traffic is being detoured around the area.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident.

Tift County Sheriff, Tifton Police, Tifton Tift County Fire Department, and Tift County EMS are assisting.

Authorities at the scene have not said whether the victim was male or female.

There is no word yet on what train company operates the engine that hit the person.
