MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — Minnesota Vikings defensive back Jay Ward returned to his hometown Saturday, hosting more than 200 campers at the indoor facility at Colquitt County High School.

For the second consecutive year, Ward brought young athletes together to learn football fundamentals and hear about what it takes to reach the next level.

“I try to do something to make it better every year,” Ward said. “Just getting the kids out the house. Just giving back to the community because a lot of them don’t get to see me.”

Ward emphasized faith as his biggest lesson learned. One camper reflected on that message.

“I learned that if you just trust in God he’ll help you through anything,” a camper said.

Community pride

Ward’s return drew praise from Colquitt County High School coach Sean Calhoun, who addressed the campers.

“We are very proud of him,” Calhoun said. “Everywhere Jay goes he represents our community and we love him for that.”

Ward said being around the young athletes reminded him of his own childhood.

“The kids are funny just being around them,” Ward said. “Just make me want to be a kid again. Running around doing drills.”

Ward’s message to the campers centered on faith, giving back and perseverance.

“No matter where you from whatever you dream you can achieve,” Ward said. “Don’t let anybody else kill your dream.”
