Strong Winds and Fire Danger Continues with No Rain in Sight

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A dangerous combination of strong winds, low humidity, and bone-dry conditions is creating a fire danger across parts of southwest Georgia. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as any fires that start could spread rapidly despite dry conditions. Meanwhile, gusty winds will persist through Thursday, with the strongest gusts 30mph+ expected on Wednesday.

Wednesday Will Be the Windiest Day

NE-E winds will strengthen significantly on Wednesday, with the strongest wind gusts possibly exceeding 35 mph.

Over the Gulf waters, a Gale Warning remains in effect from late tonight through Wednesday night, supporting frequent gale-force wind gusts. Boaters should secure their vessels and take precautions for rough conditions.

Winds Begin to Ease Thursday

The good news: winds start tapering off on Thursday, though they’ll remain breezy with frequent gusts of 20-25 mph possible during the day. Temperatures begin warming, with highs reaching the upper 70s and low 80s by Thursday.

Warming Trend Arrives This Weekend

By the weekend, high pressure settles over the region, bringing warmer temperatures. Daytime highs are expected to reach mid-to-upper 80s—about 5 to 10 degrees above normal for early April. Overnight lows will remain closer to average in the mid-50s.

Drought Conditions Will Worsen

The extended forecast shows no significant rainfall expected through the end of next week. With persistent dry conditions and no rain in sight, drought conditions across the region are expected to persist or worsen. This is particularly concerning for areas already dealing with exceptional drought conditions.

What You Should Do

  • Secure loose outdoor items that could blow away in the strong winds
  • Avoid outdoor burning of any kind through at least Thursday
  • Follow local burn ban restrictions if they are in effect in your area
  • Take precautions if you’re on the water — rough conditions are expected on coastal waters and the Gulf through Friday
  • Prepare for warmer weather arriving this weekend with temperatures climbing into the 80s
