ALBANY — Sherwood Christian celebrated a signing Wednesday morning as Allie Hemmings committed to play soccer at South Georgia State College.

Hemmings, who plays for the Lady Eagles, said she is embracing a new role as a leader both on and off the field. She described a personal transformation that began this past summer.

“This past summer, I realized that I did not have a relationship with the Lord. And He convicted my heart of that. And He showed me that I was not truly saved. And so I nailed down my salvation this summer,” Hemmings said. “And so this past year, He has been refining me and tuning my heart. And He’s been able to show me where I need to be and what a true Christ follower looks like. And with that comes a lot of responsibility. And I want to be able to lead well and lead like Christ does.”

Playing with family

At South Georgia State, Hemmings will have the opportunity to play alongside her sister, who is already on the team. Her sister suffered an ACL injury this past season.

“It means the world to me. I’m so excited. It’s so special to be able to do this because this past season that she tore ACL, you know, it broke my heart. It was devastating. And I didn’t know what I wanted to do. But I knew the Lord was like, no, you’re going to go play with your sister,” Hemmings said. “And we’re such a dynamic duo. It’s so cool because like I’m a four and she’s a midfielder. And so she knows how, like exactly where I want the ball.”

Family support

Hemmings credited her family’s support for helping her reach this milestone.

“Just the support of my family. Like they go to every single one of my games. They push me to be better. You know, my parents, they paid for all the ID camps and the opportunities to be looked at,” she said. “And it’s so comforting to know that you have those friends and family around you to build you up. When you get down, they’re there.”

Hemmings will play one final season with Sherwood Christian in the spring before heading to South Georgia State.
