Colquitt County woman granted immunity after previously facing murder charges
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -A Colquitt County, facing multiple murder charges, is now a free woman.
After her claim of self-defense, Katelyn Ireland, was granted immunity by the judge.
The District Attorney for the Southern Judicial Circuit told WALB’s Madison Foglio they officially closed Ireland’s case Monday, July 1, following the judge’s grant for immunity.
In 2022, Ireland was arrested and charged with the murder of Jason McCollum.
Ireland lived with McCollum’s estranged wife in December of 2022. Ireland shot and killed McCollum during a visit to their home.
Ireland previously faced the following charges:
- 1 count of malice murder
- 1 count of felony murder
- 3 counts of possession of a firearm
- 3 counts of aggravated assault
Back in April, a hearing was held where Ireland’s attorney says she filed in self-defense.
On Thursday, June 25, the judge granted Katelyn Ireland immunity from this argument.
“We accept what the judge ruled that, you know, we understood going into it that it was going to be a close issue and the defense was able to show by preponderance of evidence that it was self-defense.”
